TUSCALOOSA, AL (1.28.11) – The inaugural Coca-Cola Concert Series will kick off with a weekend of diverse entertainment to officially launch the opening of the new Tuscaloosa Amphitheater. Friday night will feature The Avett Brothers and Band of Horses, produced in conjunction with the Student Government Association at the University of Alabama. Saturday night will feature two legendary acts on one stage with Patti LaBelle and The O’Jays.
The Avett Brothers formed in 2001 in Charlotte, North Carolina and have since grown to have a huge grassroots following. Combining bluegrass, country, punk, pop, folk, rock & honky tonk, their sound has been described by the San Francisco Chronicle as possessing the “heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of the Beatles, the raw energy of the Ramones.” They’ll be joined by Band of Horses, whose most recent album Infinite Arms was nominated for the 2010 Grammy for Best Alternative Album.
Patti LaBelle has sold over 50 million records worldwide and been called the Godmother of Soul, the High Priestess of Good Vibrations and the Queen of Rock & Soul. She is renowned for her stage performances and vocal range with hits such as 1974’s Lady Marmalade.
The O’Jays were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. They have scored seven Top Twenty singles and eight Top Twenty albums on the US Billboard 200 pop album chart.
Tickets for both kickoff weekend concerts go on sale Saturday, February 12th at 10am at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater Box Office, Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets or charge by phone at 800.745.3000.
